The Mebane Scoop: Parks for Our Community

Do you yearn to be outside? Do you have children who yearn to frolic and jump, or maybe participate in something a little less dignified than frolicking? Mebane is the place to be when you wish to be free of the confines of your home.

Over the years, Mebane has worked to make this city a fun and welcoming place for everyone to feel comfortable going outside and enjoying their day. One of the ways they have done that is by investing in parks, greenways, and walking trails. There is a total of seven parks, with three of them being pocket parks. I have personally gone to all seven of them and have compiled a list of what I like about each one and why I believe they are worth visiting. That said, I am twenty years old, so my idea of a good playground or park may be slightly out of date.

Cates Farm Park

What was once a pickle farm is now home to one of Mebane's newest parks, complete with a playground and trail system.

I should preface this by saying that I have not yet explored the trails myself. The park features 2 miles of trails, but it has simply been way too hot for my liking to go trekking on them. However, I have seen the playground, and all I have to say is wow.

Honestly, I’m a little jealous. Why couldn’t this have been around when I was a kid? The playground is so much larger than I expected it to be, and in my opinion, resembles a pirate ship, which I think is pretty neat.

Another aspect of this park is that they have made it more inclusive and accessible. The playground includes a wheelchair- accessible swing, as well as mats and ramps to make mobility around the playground safer and easier to navigate the space. Beyond its accessibility features, the playground simply looks like a lot of fun. There are climbing walls, bridges, swings, slides, mini obstacle courses, and even small hideouts for imaginative play. It also includes a small shelter with picnic tables and bathrooms.

Mebane Community Park is one of the more well-known parks in the area. Located at 550 W. Center Street, this park has everything you could ever dream of. It features two artificial turf fields that can be used for just about any sport. From what I have seen, they are mostly used for soccer, however, many people play football and lacrosse as well. It is also great for any off-season training you may need.

Accompanying the turf fields is a playground, a splash pad, and an open play area with real grass. So, if the turf fields are full, or just too hot in the summer heat, you can cool off in
the splash pad or lie out on the grass to cool down. If that is not enough, you can take a reprieve from the blazing sun under the main shelter that houses picnic tables and bathrooms.

One of the park's standout features is its dog park, located near the entrance. The fenced area includes separate enclosures for small and large dogs, making it a comfortable and safe space for pets of all sizes. How cool is that! The park is also home to the recently installed Cone Health Community Fitness Court, designed to give you a full body workout. The court includes stations for agility, core strength, lunges, pull exercises, push exercises, squats, and more.

Whenever you feel like you need to connect more with nature, or if you think your children need a chance to spend more time outdoors, come to Holt Street Park. What I loved about this park was how many trees surrounded the area. Even though I was in the city, I felt disconnected, but in the best way possible. It felt like a breath of fresh air, like I could fully relax. The playground itself is small and colorful, at least when you compare it to Cates Farm Park.

Like the other parks, it contains a shelter with picnic tables and bathrooms. However, if you are really in the mood to party or enjoy a cookout, there are two grills at this park for your disposal. They have also added another covered area with benches and exercise playprints — interactive fitness stations that add a fun twist to a traditional workout.

I grew up visiting this park, so being able to go back felt nostalgic. One thing I have always loved about this park is the shade. Personally, the more shade a playground has, the better, and Holt Street Park certainly delivers. On a hot summer day, the mature trees surrounding the park make a noticeable difference.

The Giles and McKinley Street Park is a cute little green space located on the corner of...drumroll please...W. McKinley and Giles Street!

In my opinion, this park doesn’t feel like it is used for loud, rowdy playing. It feels more like a place you go to relax. So, with that in mind, it makes the perfect pit stop for people walking, running, and biking through the area, or anyone who wants to sit, read a book, draw, contemplate life, or chat with your buddies about quantum physics. The choice is up to you.

The park encompasses several benches, a walking path, trash cans, cornhole, and a concrete covered patio.

So, stop by, take a moment to unwind, and enjoy your day. To learn more about Giles and McKinley Street Pocket Park, visit https://cityofmebanenc.gov/giles-and-mckinley-street-pocket-park/

One thing you must know about Mebane’s pocket parks is that they typically do not have dedicated parking areas. They seem to be designed primarily for people who live nearby or happen to be walking, running, or biking through the area.

That said, First Street Pocket Park is a charming little hidden gem.

The park sits down below road level at 657 N. First Street, nestled among a grove of trees that provide shade for the entire park. It honestly felt like entering a new world. Placed in the open grass is a bench swing and a game of cornhole. During my visit, I even spotted a deer nearby! If the space feels safe and welcoming to wildlife, it's easy to see why people enjoy spending time there as well.

Located at 815 Fifth Street is a charming little park right next to Mebane Oaks Road. It has
a gazebo, a bench swing, and a walking path. I have seen many, many people take prom, birthdays, or even graduation photos at this spot every year. I can’t say that I have seen others sit and relax here, but it is a nice place if you decide to do so. Plus, there is food
right across the street if you get hungry.
