SUMMARY:Kingsdown: A History Exhibit
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\nPress Release on the Kingsdown Exhibit:\n\n\n\n \n“Gentlemen: We have yours of the 30th – and regret to find that the two mattresses shipped (to) you some days ago\, were too short. This is our regular length mattress and we do not understand this unless your bed is a special size—in this case\, we do not feel that we are responsible but if you will ship these back to us\, we will make you two more.” So wrote B. F. Warren\, Secretary and Treasurer of the Mebane Bedding Company\, Inc. August 1\, 1907\, to Glencoe Cotton Mills. \nFurther correspondence indicates that Glencoe likely didn’t allow the mattresses the time they needed to return to their proper length after being rolled for shipping. \nGood customer service wasn’t The Mebane Bedding Co.’s only positive trait\, they quickly became industry leaders in manufacturing and the use of new materials. When they were known as the Mebane Royall Co. their best- \nselling mattress was called the “Kingsdown”. As a marketing device\, they painted the name on the sides of their delivery trucks and the company’s name as we know it today was born. \nHundreds of Mebanites and multiple generations of the same families have worked at Kingsdown. Some\, like Jane Holt Bailey’s family\, go back four generations to her GreatGrandfather Joseph Alfred Holt. Her Grandfather\, Father\, and Uncle followed Joseph into the company with the last\, William Alfred Holt\, Jr. to retire in 1995. As Jane put it recently; “It put food on our tables for many generations and it’s in our blood.” \nThe work they did\, the machines they built\, the sounds of their feet on the old building’s wide\, wooden floors may be gone\, but its history remains. Right now\, it’s on exhibit at the Mebane Historical Museum until late July of this year. \nThis program is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Her Crowning Glory: The African American Woman and her Hats
DESCRIPTION:Her Crowing Glory: African American women and their hats. \nFree Program June 19th at 6:00 p.m. \nMebane Historical Museum \n209 W. Jackson St. \n919.563-5054 for more information \n \nWith emancipation came many new outlooks for black women\, and looking their best when worshiping became a big part of that perspective. Hats were considered a way to honor God. As a fashion deeply rooted in African tradition\, they became an article with both spiritual and cultural significance. \nFancy headwear\, customarily\, was considered a woman’s “crown” and it symbolized triumph over hardship. From the very simple to the big and bold\, women worshipping in hats is a tradition that’s been passed down through generations. They bring dignity to those who wear them\, and they make an important statement about what it means to be a black church-going woman in America. \nThese hats go from the unusual to the outrageous and women who wear them never own just one or two. Widely considered wear-able art that represents a meaningful part of the African American woman’s culture\, they tell a story and act as an expression of faith. While enslaved\, black women used headdresses to distinguish themselves. Today it’s not uncommon to see hats designed with West African features including beads and other flourishes. Post-emancipation a black middle class began to emerge and with it came the hat that represented God’s blessings in the woman’s life. After a week of hard work and toil\, black women would shine with a celebratory air come Sunday morning because of their hats. \nAt this program on June 19\, 2023\, we can see dozens of such hats worn by Mebanite Mary Corbett. Before her passing in June 2020\, she was both known and admired for her tremendous hat collection and rarely missed an opportunity to wear one. Consider the power they imply\, the faith they praise\, and the statement they make\, and you will immediately recognize their importance.
